Candidasa is a coastal region on Bali’s eastern side, in Karangasem. Candidasa can work as a base for exploring eastern Karangasem, but it is not interchangeable with Amed or Padangbai. Amed is sought out for its own coastal villages and marine setting; Padangbai has a separate harbour-side character and its own routes. The best choice depends on where you plan to spend your days, whether you want a quieter place to return to, and how much time you are comfortable spending on the road. Check the actual distance and transport for each outing rather than relying on a broad “East Bali” label.
The area combines a coastal road and places set back from the water, so practical details can change over a short distance. If you are staying for more than a few nights, compare accommodation with the shops, food, transport and services you will need, and check how you would reach them. For day trips, leave room for slower travel on local roads and confirm opening or access information for each destination directly; nearby landmarks do not all lie within Candidasa itself.
